Colombia supplies the majority of the world's finest emeralds — and the distinction is not marketing. It is geology. The specific combination of chromium and vanadium in Colombian deposits, particularly from the Muzo and Chivor regions, produces a vivid green with a luminosity that other sources do not replicate.

What makes one Colombian emerald woth more than another?
Color is the primary driver — specifically the combination of hue, saturation, and tone. The ideal Colombian emerald is vivid green without grey, yellow, or brown undertones. Muzo green — a pure, intense chromium-driven green — is the benchmark.
Transparency is the second driver. Emeralds with high transparency allow light to move through the stone and return to the eye as a luminous glow. Heavily included stones trap light and appear dark or dull regardless of color.

Because different gemstones have different densities, stones of the same carat weight can vary in visible dimensions. For example, one gemstone may appear slightly larger or smaller than another of equal carat weight depending on its material and cut proportions.
