July Birthstone · 15th & 40th Anniversary
The most passionate July birthday gift — and the most coveted red on earth.
Ruby is the birthstone of July — a stone that has symbolized passion, courage, and undying love across every culture that has ever treasured it. It is also the traditional gift for 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries — chosen not because of convention, but because no other stone carries the weight of devotion the way ruby does.
The Gemstone
Ruby
Ruby belongs to the corundum family, sharing the same durability and brilliance as sapphire. Its intense red color has made it one of the most prized gemstones throughout history.
Each ruby is selected for:
• Rich, balanced red saturation
• Strong brilliance and clarity
• Elegant oval proportions
• High jewelry–grade appearance
"Prestige is not a label. It is 30 years of knowing the difference."

What is Pigeon Blood Red and why does it matter?
Pigeon Blood Red is the highest grade in ruby — a pure, vivid red with no orange, brown, or purple undertone. The name comes from the specific hue of a freshly opened pigeon's eye — a benchmark used by Burmese traders for centuries before gemological laboratories existed.
Most rubies on the market are not Pigeon Blood grade. The color either leans orange, sits too dark, or carries a grey secondary tone. A true Pigeon Blood ruby is vivid, saturated, and alive in every light condition.
Color change strength in alexandrite has its parallel here — Pigeon Blood is to ruby what strong color change is to alexandrite. It is the quality that separates a stone worth owning from one that merely qualifies as ruby. At Pel & Co., our specialists select exclusively for this standard.
Does carat weight determine the size of a gemstone?
Carat measures a gemstone’s weight — not its physical size.
Because different gemstones have different densities, stones of the same carat weight can vary in visible dimensions. For example, one gemstone may appear slightly larger or smaller than another of equal carat weight depending on its material and cut proportions.
For the most accurate understanding of size, we recommend referencing the listed millimeter measurements (length × width), which reflect how the gemstone will appear when worn.
Pel & Co provides precise dimensions for every stone to ensure clarity and confidence in your selection.
Is ruby durable for daily wear?
Yes. Ruby is extremely durable and ideal for engagement rings.
What makes one ruby more valuable than another?
Color is everything — specifically the Pigeon Blood standard. Saturation, hue purity, and how the stone holds its red under different light sources are the three criteria that determine value. A ruby that greys under fluorescent light or shifts orange in candlelight falls short regardless of size.
Clarity is the second driver. Rubies naturally contain inclusions — accepted in the trade at levels that would disqualify a diamond. What matters is whether the inclusions interrupt light transmission and color performance. Eye clean specimens at Pigeon Blood grade are exceptionally rare.
Cut is the third. A poorly cut ruby hides its color in the depth and shows a dark centre face-up. Our in-house cutting controls the proportions that determine how much of the stone's actual color is visible. That decision is ours — not a third party's.
Can I customize the setting?
Yes. Pel & Co offers custom gemstone development and bespoke design.
Why lab created?
Natural Pigeon Blood rubies of genuine quality are among the rarest gemstones on earth — and priced accordingly. The premium for natural origin at this grade has nothing to do with how the stone looks, performs, or wears. It is purely provenance.
Lab-created ruby at Pigeon Blood standard has identical chemical composition, crystal structure, and optical properties. The color is the same. The hardness is the same. The brilliance is the same. What differs is the origin — and with it, the ability to select consistently to a standard most natural stones never achieve.
At Pel & Co., we cut every Prestige ruby in-house. The standard is ours. The result is a stone that performs the way Pigeon Blood ruby is supposed to perform — not the way a budget parcel allows it to.
